What is Reach Out and Read?
Reach
Out and Read (www.reachoutandread.org) (ROR) is
the nation’s leading pediatric literacy program. The three
components of ROR are: 1) doctors and nurses provide age-appropriate
reading and literacy information to parents at every well-child visit
from age 6months to 5 years; 2) the child goes home with a brand
new age-appropriate book to establish their own “library” of
10 books by age 5; and 3) literacy-rich waiting rooms with volunteer
readers and high-quality parent education materials.
ROR was started in 1989 at Boston Medical Center. Today, ROR reaches
over 2.5 million children in nearly 3200 sites in 50 states and delivers
over 4.1 million books annually. Additionally, 44,100 physicians and
nurses have been trained to implement this pediatric literacy program. ROR has
been evaluated in long-term studies showing its effectiveness at increasing
parental reading habits, vocabulary in young children, and preparing
children to come to school ready to read. President Bush has committed
$10 million in 2008 to support ROR programs across the country. (http://www.reachoutandread.org/advocacy.html)
