| Reach Out and Read Michigan Events Fundraising
For the month of August, Borders stores throughout
S.E. Michigan will work with Reach Out and Read Michigan
to promote literacy and put books in the hands of children
by hosting a month-long book drive! Last year's drive brought
in over 10,500 books donated by customers - at a value of
approximately $57,000. This year once again, Borders will
donate 5% of the retail value of these books to ROR-MI, which
brought last year's donation value to nearly $60,000!
The details:
WHAT: From August 1-31, Borders customers will be encouraged to purchase
and donate new children's books to benefit Reach Out and Read (ROR) Michigan
sites and the children they serve. Customers can simply pick their favorite
age-appropriate books, take them to the registers, and let the cashier
know that they would like to donate them. Borders will then give the
books to ROR Michigan.
WHERE: 17 SE Michigan Borders locations will be participating in this
book drive. For a complete listing, please go to BORDERS' website: www.borders.com
BUT
WAIT! THERE'S MORE! In addition to the book drive, 3 ROR-MI
sites will conduct Teddy Bear Clinics
at the Utica, Dearborn, and Flint stores. (2007 Teddy Bear
Clinics in Utica and Flint
pictured here!) Children are invited to bring in their favorite
stuffed friend for a free check-up given by a Reach Out and
Read medical professional.
The kids love it, the parents learn about Reach Out and Read,
and it's a great excuse to bring your teddy bear to the bookstore!

A book drive was held at the Phoenix Theatre West River on March 15th
in Farmington, to benefit Reach Out and Read Michigan, at a showing of "Dr.
Seuss's Horton Hears a Who!" To open the movie, "Green Eggs
and Ham" was read by DPTV's Matt Carey and his lovely daughter Lauren.
The Cat in the Hat was there to greet moviegoers, as were Dr. Kimberly
Matthews-Winston and Dr. Beth Swartz of Henry Ford Hospital in West Bloomfield,
and Mary Jo McEvoy, ROR Coordinator from Children's Hospital of Michigan.
We appreciated the partnership with DPTV, Phoenix Theatres, and 20th
Century Fox.

The totals are in from the 15 stores participating in BORDERS
Book Drive to Benefit ROR-MI in August! Customers
donated 10,469 books valued at over $50,000, and the 5% of sales check
to ROR
Michigan will be $2588.65! We had a lot of fun with the
event! We "introduced" the Prescription
for Healthy Readers poster sponsored and created by Sleeping
Bear Press.
Stores held Teddy Bear Clinics with Linda Goldsberry, RN
in Flint (see photo above), and Dr. Jay Eastman in Utica. THANK
YOU, BORDERS! |
